ACS Relay For Life Presents ABX with Purple Team Award

WILMINGTON, OHIO - July 2, 2003 - The ABX Air, Inc., Relay for Life team earned the Purple Team Award for its team's efforts in the recent Relay for Life event. It is one of only five awards at that level earned in the state so far this year.

"I can't say enough about how impressed I am with the ABX employees," said Jill Raleigh, Executive Director of the American Cancer Society for the Southwest Ohio Area Office. "I appreciate that you allow your employees to get that involved and that you encourage that."

Teams can earn a Purple Team award for generating over $30,000 for the Relay. Raising more than $45,000 throughout the year through fundraisers and the annual Fall Charity Drive, the ABX team was this year's top money-raising team in its division and overall.

Not only did employees donate money; they also donated their time. According to Norm Hansel, Senior Structures Technician at ABX, nearly 20 percent of the Clinton County Board for Relay for Life is comprised of ABX employees. Hansel was the Co Chair Person for the 2003 event. "We had people working on the board, working on the program, setting up lights and more," said Hansel. "And, ABX is very supportive of the event."

Angie Poppaw, Sort Supervisor, and ABX Team Captain for the past two years is already looking forward to next year. "It was the best year ever! Our team size grew, the money we raised grew, and it continues to be more fun every year," said Poppaw, who coordinated many fund-raising events to support the team's donations.

ABX had over 29 employees and family members on the team who pledged to have a walker on the track throughout the 18-hour event. While the weather was a small challenge, the team stuck with it through the night. After presenting Joe Hete, ABX President, with the wall plaque and the Purple Team award, Raleigh commented, "ABX is its own community, and the team effort they displayed is really representative of the Relay slogan - 'It's about a community that takes up the fight.'"
