ABX Air Receives Garden Club Award

WILMINGTON, OHIO - August 8, 2003 - Carolyn Matthews, Beautification Committee Chairperson for the Wilmington Garden Club, presented ABX Air, Inc., employees with the Community Commercial Landscaping Award early Thursday.

"Beautifying the workplace with landscaping is a great idea," said Matthews. "It helps everybody feel better."

Each year the Garden Club recognizes organizations that work to improve the appearance of their facilities with flowers and landscaping. The Wilmington Garden Club is a member of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs and presented the award for "outstanding achievement in design and maintenance of commercial property and community beautification," according to the text on the award.

"We have been running this program for two summers now," said David Allen, one of the coordinators of the Adopt-an-Island program at ABX. "We went from 10 teams with approximately 50 people involved last year to 18 teams and 85 people involved this year. The project went over so well we expanded from just the islands to big flower pots in more places around the base."

According to Allen, the Adopt-an-Island program was created to perk up the plots in the main parking lot after the trees were removed due to the Japanese Beatles eating them. "We asked for employee volunteers to adopt these 'islands' of dirt and turn them into flower beds. We had such a big response, we made flower beds in more places."

ABX provides each group with some "seed" money and dirt and mulch. The islands are maintained throughout the summer by the employee volunteers and are judged by the management staff. Toward the end of each summer, the Company gathers all the volunteers together for a recognition event including food and awards.

"It is a fun program; the employees enjoy it, the grounds look better and each group tries to outdo the rest," commented Elise Brestelli, also a coordinator of the project. "I think the management also has fun with it - some of them even get involved in the competition."
