ABX Air Receives Awards From Veteran's Groups

ABX Air was
recognized as
Large Employer
of the Year 2003
for the state of
Ohio by the
Disabled American
Veterans (DAV).

WILMINGTON, OH - Nov. 25, 2003 - At a formal ceremony in Cleveland Friday, Nov. 21, ABX Air / Airborne Express was recognized as Large Employer of the Year for the state of Ohio by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Representatives from DAV, the American Legion, American Veterans (AMVETS), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) gathered for the event to recognize businesses and organizations that actively support veterans and those in the service.

"I was very proud to go and represent ABX Air," said Tom Poynter, Senior Vice President of Ground Operations for ABX Air, Inc. "Being a veteran, I was proud to be a part of the event. Joe Hete, President of ABX, was invited and he invited me to attend - I appreciate that." Poynter is a US Air Force veteran of Vietnam.

ABX Air received a nomination earlier this year in recognition for all it does to support its veterans.

ABX Air was
presented with
the State of Ohio
Governor's Award
as an Employer of
the Year 2003.

"When we started to look at the numbers, they spoke for themselves," said Ken Marcum, a representative of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and local veterans. "We nominated the company for our district, Chapter 89 covering Fayette, Clinton and Madison counties, and it went onto the state level from there."

"We knew we were nominated for that award, and that is a great statement in itself," added Poynter. "Additionally, we were also presented with the Governor's award - a very pleasant surprise and honor."

After the organizations choose their state winners, the Governor's office reviews the recipients and selects one business in the state to receive the Governor's Award.

Currently ABX employs over 1,600 veterans and has over 30 employees on active military duty. In honor of these active duty employees ABX flies the Blue Star flag at its Administration building. Recently ABX announced a program to help its active duty reservists get home from their U.S. military base when they are offered two-week furloughs from active duty in the Middle East. While active duty employees are away, ABX offers their families assistance with household chores. Among other things, ABX offers its non-bargaining activated employees up to 30 days of differential pay and continues to accrue their vacation time during their activation. ABX also recognizes its veterans each fall with a personally signed letter from President Joe Hete.

ABX Air is a multi-faceted airline with a fleet of 115 aircraft that operates out of a privately owned airport in Wilmington, Ohio, and eleven hubs throughout the United States. In addition to providing airlift capacity to DHL/Airborne, ABX Air provides charter and maintenance services to a diverse group of customers.
