ABX Air Presents First of New Award

Wings of Excellence Awards presented to two employees

WILMINGTON, OH - Mar. 5, 2004 - At a company meeting President and CEO of ABX Air, Inc., Joe Hete and Vice President of Air Park Services Rusty Smethwick recognized two employees with the first Wings of Excellence awards.

Last week shortly after arriving at work an ABX Air employee had a heart attack. Employees Carol Bartlett and Tim Corsbie stepped up to help. "Carol and Tim went into action without hesitation," said Smethwick. "Tim started CPR and Carol went for help."

"It looks like they did a good job," added Smethwick. "These first silver Wings of Excellence awards are presented for the humanitarian thing they did."

ABX Air employee and daughter of the employee involved, Kris Thomas, said, "The doctors told us two things saved my father's life: the quick response and administration of CPR, and the skills and tools of ABX Air EMTs."

Several years ago, ABX Air equipped their rescue crews with an AED - Automatic Electronic Defibrillator. This equipment reads the vital information of a victim and automatically will shock the victim to regain a normal heart rhythm if necessary. All full-time ABX Air EMTs, as well as other EMTs on base, are trained to use this equipment.

"There are just no words to express my gratitude for what Carol and Tim, as well as the EMTs did to save my father's life," added Thomas. "The EMTs and ABX also deserve a pat on the back for providing the training and latest technology to save lives."

When Hete presented Corsbie and Bartlett with the Presidential Gold Wings of Excellence, he added, "Their actions demonstrate once again caliber of people we have working here and the spirit of ABX family."

The Wings of Excellence award was designed to recognize employees who went beyond the call of their jobs. Employees can receive the award in any of five categories: Customer Service; Safety; Ingenuity; Cost Effectiveness and Community Involvement/Humanitarian Work. Gold Wings of Excellence awards are presented at the end of each year to those who have earned the silver award that stand out from that group. The Presidential Gold Wings of Excellence award is presented by the President at any time to recognize especially notable accomplishments.

"We have worked with a similar award in the past when we were part of Airborne Express, but developed this one and redefined some of the criteria to better fit our new company values," said Hete. "We have great employees and this is just one more example of the excellent people we have working here."
